How to Choose the Right Size Dog Hoodie, Jacket or T shirt

Choosing dog clothing size is much easier when you ignore breed guesswork and use real measurements. Two dogs of the same breed can fit completely differently, especially around the chest, back and neck. A good fit should look neat, feel comfortable and let your dog move naturally.

This guide explains how to measure your dog for hoodies, jackets and T shirts, and what to do if your dog sits between sizes.

The three measurements that matter

Back length

Measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. This helps avoid clothing that is too short or too long.

Chest / girth

Measure around the widest part of the chest, usually just behind the front legs. This is often the most important measurement.

Neck

Useful for styles that sit closer around the collar area. It should never feel tight or restrictive.

How to measure properly

  1. Use a soft tape measure if you have one.
  2. Measure while your dog is standing naturally, not curled up or stretching.
  3. Keep the tape close to the body but not tight.
  4. Write the measurements down in centimetres.
  5. Compare them with the product size chart before choosing.

If your dog has a thick coat, deep chest or unusual shape, allow a little extra comfort room. The clothing should not pull across the chest or bunch awkwardly around the shoulders.

Chest room is usually the deciding factor

Back length matters, but chest fit often decides whether a piece is wearable. Dogs need room to walk, sit, sniff, turn and breathe comfortably. If the chest is too tight, the garment may look fine in a photo but feel wrong on a real walk.

Simple rule: if one size suits back length but the chest is tight, go for the size that gives better movement.

Different products fit differently

A T shirt, hoodie and jacket can all sit slightly differently. A lightweight tee can be closer fitting, while a warmer jacket or hoodie may need a little more room. If your dog is between sizes, think about the product type and how they’ll wear it.

  • T shirts: good for light coverage and a neater fit.
  • Hoodies: allow comfort through the body and chest.
  • Jackets: should give enough room for movement, especially on colder walks.

Signs the fit is wrong

Watch how your dog moves. If they stop walking, hunch, scratch at the clothing, or seem restricted around the front legs, the fit may not be right. If the garment slides around too much, it may be too loose.

Before you order

Measure once, check twice, and choose the most comfortable fit for your dog’s shape. If you’re buying as a gift, ask for measurements rather than guessing by breed.
